Nossa Senhora de Vila Velha Sanctuary Viewpoint

The Nossa Senhora da Vila Velha Sanctuary is situated on the hill with the same name, at about 500meters distance from Fronteira, in the heart of the vast Alentejo region.

It is said that the Fronteira village had origin in this hill. The date of construction of this sanctuary is not known with certainty, however some say it might have been in 1226. It is known that in 1498 this Sanctuary already existed.
From the original building only some vestiges of tombs and tombstones. The sanctuary’s interior is decorated with beautiful glazed tiles.

From the adjacent viewpoint one has a wonderful panorama of all the surrounding scenery, with Fronteira and Cabeço de Vide at its feet.
